Farm Mission Statement:

Blue Bird Canyon Ranch specializes in the small-ranch concept of "Alpacas on Acre".  We can show you how to produce great results in your own backyard!

Farm Description:

Blue Bird Canyon Ranch was conceived in early 2006, as an ecologically responsible, earth-friendly way to take advantage of our perfect southern California climate.  Located 40 miles north of San Diego, in Vista, CA, just 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean on a hill 900 feet above sea level, our huacaya alpacas enjoy sea breezes every morning and evening, heavy cooling fogs most nights, and lots of healthy sun during most days.

Our alpaca breeding and nutrition programs benefit from Liz’s 25 years as a research scientist specializing in physiological ecology of dolphins, a surprising relative of alpacas with a common ancestor (the cetartiodactyls).  Our customer support and development programs benefit from Tim’s 35 years as a business development specialist in the wireless communications industry.

One of the reasons we chose to raise alpacas is that they don't require moving to the back of beyond.  These quiet, gentle, low maintenance livestock can be happy and healthy when  properly managed in small herds on parcels as small as an acre.

Pre-purchase research convinced us that the Ideal Alpaca Community concept (providing a web-based environment for small ranch development as part of a virtual large ranch), combined with the IAC EPD Program (providing for small ranch participation in the first large-scale, scientifically-based breeding program based on solid quantitative data), and the wide selection of Studmaster herdsires available through the IAC, provide the optimal starting point for a new small alpaca ranch.

In late June 2006 we bought 4 late-term pregnant female huacayas bred to Studmaster males.  Between August and November 2006 these 4 Moms had produced 3 girls and 1 boy cria.  By March 2007 when our alpacas arrived at the Ranch, all 4 Moms were again pregnant with Studmaster babies.  It’s been quite a year at Blue Bird Canyon Ranch!

We look forward to helping others join the warm and fuzzy (literally) world of alpacas.  We encourage you to give us a call, come to visit, and look into joining the alpaca community!
