Farm Mission Statement:
At Inti Alpacas, our breeding goal is to produce a herd of alpacas that retain 'Royal' and 'Baby' fine fleeces to age 10 - and beyond. These grades of alpaca fiber truly are 'softer than cashmere', with the added textile advantages of staple length and a distinctive subtle sheen. The world demand for these grades of alpaca greatly exceeds the supply.
We enjoy the wonderful people from all walks of life who are involved with alpacas. This diversity of background and experience is the strength of the alpaca industry. Our mission is to work together with other alpaca breeders, both old and new, toward the development of an environmentaly friendly alpaca industry based on the sustainable production and processing of alpaca fiber in the US..
Farm Description:
About Inti Alpacas:
When looking for an eco friendly use for our New England farm, we wanted something that would be economically viable on a small scale. And we wanted something that would be enjoyable as well as profitable. Alpacas were the answer!
These hardly members of the camel family are perfectly suited to sustainable agriculture practices. Managed intensive grazing rotating several species, with alpacas as the centerpiece of our operation, has enabled us to reclaim depleted and overgrown land - without the use of petroleum based chemicals or artificial fertilizers.
Alpaca fiber is one of the rarest of the animal fibers and can easily be processed at home or by mini-mills using organic processing. We like that! With increasing concerns about the political, financial, and environmental effects of petroleum use (the source of man-made fibers), natural fibers are gaining renewed interest. This interest coincides with consumer desires for American made products. By selectively breeding for the fiber qualities that high-end customers demand, US alpaca producers can fill that market.
Meeting customer desires for quality products while helping to save the environment - that's what sustainable agriculture is all about!
About the alpaca:
In spite of their visual appeal, alpacas are not merely 'pasture poodles'. Though many people own them just for enjoyment, their fiber was 'the coin of the realm' in the Incan Empire, and is today the basis of a textile industry in Peru, and is a major export for that country. World demand for the finer grades continues to exceed the supply.
With reasonable care and adequate shelter, these natives of the harsh altiplano region, located among the Andean mountains of South America, have readily adapted to all areas of the US. Though a full time operation does require some land, alpacas can be successfully raised on just a few acres. Averaging around 150 lbs, their size makes them manageable by those with little or no livestock experience. Retired couples enjoy raising alpacas as a second career. Families with young children can all work together in the business. Stay at home moms have found that an alpaca business - with the livestock, a fiber store, or both - can be the ideal home based business.
About the Rural Alianza:
The Rural Alianza of Peru has selectively bred generations of quality alpacas that produce commercial quantities of fine fleece. Inti Alpacas offers stud service and alpacas for sale from pure Alianza and Alianza / Accoyo blends - a resource of genetic predictability.
